Huddersfield Overview


Huddersfield is known for being a market town and this is due to the fortune that was built on textiles from mills which are now not being used due to the move in technology. The town is situated just between Manchester and Leeds making it a very common place for commuters to live. Surrounding the town is a bowl of hills and Greenland and no matter where you are in the town you will be able to see the Pennines, these are a range of hills and mountains that separate the North east of England and the North West. There are two main markets in Huddersfield, the open market on Brook street is closed on Wednesday and Friday but open every other day of the week from 9-3 with a huge selection of goods from fabrics to fashion, household goods and hardware plus a lot more. On Tuesday and Saturday, it becomes a second-hand market which is great for them students that like to grab a bargain. Queensgate market is an indoor market that runs from Monday to Saturday and is another market where you can find anything you want for a great price.

Things to do in Huddersfield


The Town hall is a great venue that regularly holds concerts and is home to the Huddersfield Choral society, which makes it a very interesting place to go. If you love walking and great views, then head up Castle Hill and witness the ancient monument that overlooks Huddersfield. The fort at the top of the hill was built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The John Smith Stadium (home to Huddersfield Town F.C) hosts bands from all over the country such as Take that and many more. For more worldwide bands then head over to Leeds or Manchester as they are bigger cities that attract the bigger bands. There are several cinemas to visit whilst living in Huddersfield with the main one being the Odeon which is located just next to the John Smith Stadium. The Kirklees Light Railway is a great way to explore more of Huddersfield, with student tickets only being £5.50 this is a brilliant way to see the foothills of the Pennine and eventually stop off and visit Shelly Station Tea room for some lovely snacks and a hot cup of tea on a cold day.

Sport in Huddersfield


Huddersfield leisure centre is a brilliant complex which boasts a gym, squash courts, sports halls, martial arts room and many more sports activity areas. The greatest thing about the Huddersfield leisure centre is the new ‘Dare 2 Air’ inflatable theme park, this inflatable theme park is open to all ages, it has a Wipeout zone which is similar to the TV show and even a sports zone where you can play dodgeball and other sports. Huddersfield Town F.C is a premier league club that plays at the John Smith stadium where you can go and watch a game surrounded by 24,500 fans.

Escape Huddersfield


Huddersfield is very close to a few major cities such as Manchester, Sheffield and Leeds which are great places to spend the day if you want to get away from Huddersfield. These cities have everything that Huddersfield have to offer plus a lot more meaning you will struggle to not find things to do when you have a day off from university. Take a short five-mile trip to Halifax and discover the Piece Hall that has been converted into galleried shops with a bustling market area.

Transport in Huddersfield


From Huddersfield you are able to travel directly to Manchester, Sheffield, Liverpool, Leeds, York and some of the North-East. If you need to travel to London, then head to Wakefield Westgate where you will find fast trains to the City. You are able to get a coach to most parts of the UK. Huddersfield is located just 20 minutes away from the M1 which will take you all the way down south. There are a few international airports to pick from for those international students.
